Dyslexia the Chameleon

Viruses are the medical field's nightmare. Sometimes they appear to be living, and other times they appear to be nonliving.  Then they mutate and build resistance to known remedies.  It becomes a never ending circle of cat and mouse.  Fortunately, dyslexia does not exactly match that analogy. The chameleon's frequent identity changes would seem a better parallel.  However, very few people understand the complexity surrounding the topic.  Consider for a moment that dyslexia can affect the three God-given areas of communication and processing peculiar to the human race--sight, speech, and hearing.  Then dyslexia can manifest itself in a variety of perplexities in each of those three areas.  In rare instances, an individual might experience dyslexia in all three areas, but in most situations only one or two areas are affected.  Besides that, there are varying degrees of dyslexia ranging from mild to extreme.  To further cloud the picture, it has been said that everyone has a little bit of dyslexia.  Others seem to "grow out of it".  Those who are dyslexic develop a myriad of compensation skills in order to survive.  Some depend upon others to do what they cannot do for themselves.  A disproportionate number of dyslexics seek acceptance among discontents and spend life incarcerated.

Many estimate that "1 in 5 people have dyslexia," and others have estimated 1 in 7.  Either way, that's approximately 20% of earth's literate population.  Dyslexia is not known among societies until literacy is introduced into their lives.

A review of key questions reveals the multiplicity and diversity of areas in life which dyslexia can actually affect.
